Compressor Oil Singapore: Rotary Screw, Reciprocating & Air Compressors

Selecting the wrong compressor oil causes premature bearing failure, carbon deposits in valves, and unplanned downtime. This guide covers oil types, ISO VG grades, and change intervals for compressors in Singapore’s heat and humidity.

Compressor Types and Oil Requirements

Compressor TypeOil TypeTypical ISO VG
Rotary screw (oil-injected)Synthetic PAO or polyglycol compressor oil46 or 68
Reciprocating (piston)Mineral compressor oil, high-flash, low-carbon68, 100, or 150
Centrifugal (turbo)Turbine oil (no detergent)32 or 46
Vane compressorMineral or PAO compressor oil46 or 68
Scroll compressorSynthetic ester or PAO32 or 46

Critical rule: Never use engine oil or hydraulic oil in a compressor. Detergent additives in engine oil form carbon deposits at the high discharge temperatures of compressed air — creating a fire and explosion hazard in downstream pipework.

Synthetic vs Mineral Compressor Oil in Singapore

Singapore’s sustained heat (ambient 28–35°C) makes synthetic compressor oil significantly more cost-effective than mineral oil for rotary screw compressors:

  • Mineral oil: change every 1,000–2,000 hours; high oxidation rate in sustained heat; forms carbon varnish on separator elements
  • PAO synthetic: change every 4,000–8,000 hours; better thermal stability, lower varnish tendency, reduced separator element replacement frequency
  • Polyalkylene glycol (PAG): excellent for high-temperature applications; fully miscible with water (handle leaks carefully); incompatible with some seals — check OEM approval

For most Singapore industrial plants running rotary screw compressors 8–24 hours/day, the longer drain intervals of synthetic oil make it cheaper per operating hour despite higher purchase price.

Why Singapore Humidity Is a Compressor Oil Problem

Compressed air saturated with humidity (Singapore ambient RH 70–90%) produces significant condensate in the air/oil separator. Water contamination in compressor oil:

  • Reduces lubricating film strength (viscosity drop, bearing wear)
  • Promotes additive depletion and corrosion of iron components
  • Causes emulsification — milky oil that cannot lubricate and must be drained immediately

Compressors in Singapore should run long enough each cycle to reach operating temperature (>70°C) so the thermal valve opens and moisture is driven off. Short-cycling compressors accumulate water rapidly — shorten oil change intervals accordingly.

Oil Change Intervals

  • Rotary screw + mineral oil: 1,000–2,000 hours or 6 months (whichever first) in Singapore conditions
  • Rotary screw + PAO synthetic: 4,000–6,000 hours or 12 months
  • Reciprocating piston: 500–1,000 hours or 6 months — high discharge temperature accelerates degradation
  • Any compressor with water contamination: drain immediately, flush, refill regardless of hours
